The Ho-Chunk Transportation Authority provides safe, well maintained roadways for the Ho-Chunk Nation membership as well as the general public. We plan, construct and maintain the roads of the Nation. We are a Non-Profit organization which also works in partnership with local government and townships to help with planning & funding road projects.

Transportation Planning

HTA shall perform the survey, design, right-of-way, archeological and environmental services, road improvement or road construction for the Bureau of Indian Affairs Roads Construction Projects as identified in the TTIP. The HTA is currently responsible for over 33 miles of roads located in Black River Falls, Nekoosa, Tomah, Baraboo, Wittenberg, and the Wisconsin Dells areas. The HTA Maintenance program receives funding annually to maintain BIA and Tribal owned Roadways.

What We Do

Improving Transportation Infrastructure

The Ho-Chunk Transportation Authority (HTA) primarily focuses on improving transportation infrastructure and access within the Nation's communities. HTA is primarily funded by the Tribal Transportation Program (TTP) under the U.S. Department of the Interior. TTP funds support the construction, maintenance, and improvement of roads, bridges, and other transportation-related infrastructure on tribal lands. Funds are also allocated to enhance safety through projects like intersection improvements, safety barrier installations, and slope flattening. Improved transportation infrastructure facilitates access to essential resources and supports economic development and activity within the Ho- Chunk Nation.

Safe and Orderly Traffic Flow

HTA provides snow and ice removal and dust control on all tribal roads on an as-needed basis. HTA is responsible for ensuring the safe and orderly flow of traffic on tribally controlled roads and for developing transportation standards such as speed advisory signage, traffic calming devices, weight limits, surface preservation, erosion and soil control, weed control, and pedestrian and other non-vehicular accommodations.
